Empower! Workshops are a way for teen girls and their mothers or female mentors to strengthen their bond during the phase in a teen's life where they are transitioning from a child-adult relationship with their parents to an adult-adult relationship.   Through two facilitated challenge exercises we will be working toward these goals:

* Create and Encourage Resiliency in our Community's Young Women

* Bolster Self-Confidence

* Create Workable Strategies to Deal with Failures

* Encourage Mindfullness in the Moment

Our theme for this workshop is dealing with successes and failuresSuccess and Failure may not sound like a fun subject by itself but to learn more about it we need to face challenges and that's where it can become fun.

Our morning challenge involves horses.  We'll go through an introduction to safety, herd dynamic and horse body language.  Then each participant will choose a horse and be challenged to see if they can find a way to communicate with the horse in order to have the horse follow them around the round pen (without any lead ropes or halters).

After lunch Loren will meet with the moms/mentors while Julia teaches the teens some basic roping skills.  Then the teens will teach their moms/mentors the same skills.

The Workshop will be held at Paradise Ridge Horse Park on Vashon Island on August 12th from 9am-5pm.  Lunch will be served.  The majority of our time will be outside so please dress accordingly for weather.  Because we will be working up close with horses, closed toed shoes are required (no exceptions).

Our leaders are Julia Montagnet and Loren Cline M.A., LMHC. Julia has several years experience as a riding instructor and is currently in the process of working toward her certification as a PATH International Therapeutic Riding Instructor.  Loren has been a psychotherapist in private practice for almost twenty years.  She works primarily with women and teens with a focus on treating anxiety, depression and working through life transitions.

Paradise Ridge is a wheelchair accessible park so all are welcome and able to attend. If you have any special needs we should address or if you have any special dietary restrictions please let us know by the first of August so we make sure we are prepared to accommodate you.

Price for the workshop is $300 and is for both the teen and her mom or female mentor.  Recommended age range for this workshop is 12- 20 years old. There is room for ten people in the workshop, so five pairs of teens and their female mentors.  Please contact us if you need to set up a payment plan or have any other questions at julia@islandcenterfarm.com.
